Welcome to the Heiss family online journal! Our latest and most exciting news is in the tiny form of our sweet daughter, Abigail, who arrived safely and in good health on Monday, March 19 at 8:40 am.I woke up around one o'clock that morning with light contractions. I spent the next several hours debating whether or not to wake Erik up as the contractions grew more intense. (He was in the last week of his surgery rotation and had an oral exam at 9 that morning. I was worried that it would end up being false labor and then Erik would be tired during his exam.) I waited until 5 when his alarm went off, and then I told him that I thought I was having real contractions. He suggested I take a shower (which I was very grateful for later on that day) and then we'd go from there.
We left the house around 7:15 and arrived at the hospital at about 7:30. My doctor was shocked to find that I had already dilated to an 8, and she rushed us to a delivery room. By then I was a 9. We waited for Erik to go move our car out of the 15 min. parking zone; as soon as he returned, my doctor broke my water. About twenty minutes later, she told me to start pushing. I pushed for ten minutes before delivering Abigail. What an incredible feeling! I began crying as soon as I saw her. She was (and still is) the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen--cream cheese, blood and all...
Little Abby weighed 6 lbs. 5 oz. and measured 18 inches long. She has her daddy's big feet and her mommy's long, skinny arms and legs. Dad was the first to hold her, and she stopped crying almost as soon as he took her in his arms. She hasn't cried much at all since. The photo shows her about 1 hour old awaiting transportation to the nursery for a bath and check up.
